Megan + Houston's E-Session - Savannah Downtown Photographer

Kyle + Jen's Wedding - Asheville Wedding Photographer

What a beautiful day it was for Kyle and Jen's Wedding! They had gorgeous weather in the mountains of North Carolina. Hidden River Events has a perfect setting for any wedding. Friends from all over the US joined together to celebrate Kyle and Jen's love for each other. Mason jars as drink glasses, cornhole games, hoola hoops and a band that could play all night made for a happening evening to always remember. Hope y'all had fun in Costa Rica! Congratulations you two!

Frank + Katie's Wedding - Savannah Wedding Photographer

What a cute couple! They couldn't stop looking at each other! It may have been a hot one, but Frank and Katie's wedding was perfect and laid back! Bethesda, once again, proved to be a gorgeous setting. Not to mention, these two know how to be themselves while some stranger shoots their photo. We got some awesome shots! Chris + Suzanne's Wedding - Savannah Wedding Photographer

What a beautiful day it was! And Chris and Suzanne had a very beautiful wedding! Their ceremony took place in Whitefield Square where there stands a gazebo that they can revisit memories anytime. Then Old Savannah Tours provided them a trolley for the wedding party's transportation to the Savannah Golf Club. Though the Club is under renovation, their reception was indeed a party to remember!! Lots of dancing and even a soul train!! It was great to get to know you two and hope we can do dinner again soon! Love and Happiness!

Jen + Kyle E-Session - Asheville Wedding Photographer

I was lucky enough to take a trip up to Asheville, NC and capture Jen and Kyle's true personality. The weather was a little wet, but we made the most of it! Lots and lots of laughing and silliness, which are always incorporated into my favorite sessions! It was truly the most adventurous portrait session I have ever done. But those who know Jen and Kyle shouldn't be surprised by that! Enjoy! Can't wait to see y'all in June for the big occasion!

Christmas Parties

So, my husband and I had our first annual Christmas Party last weekend. It was great to see everybody there. The weekend before, Michael and I were moseying through the grocery store and then out of nowhere he turned to me and said that he thought we should have the ugliest Christmas Sweater Party instead of just a plain ole' Christmas party. We laughed at the thought, but it never came to fruition. After our party, I started noticing other people had been to themed Christmas parties and I even had a friend attend an ugliest sweater Christmas party - not sure that it had to be a Christmas sweater or not. So, maybe next year we will have the Joyner's 2nd Annual Christmas Party and include the ugliest Christmas sweater contest. I'll have to come up with some good prizes! Whatch ya think? Any takers?

Gettin' Back to Roots

Some may say they have a big family, I say I have a really big family. They are all sort of scattered all over. But my mother's maternal side of the family's roots started in Maine from the first boat ride over and travel down to Virginia and over to Arkansas over the past 250+ years. Our family also has my mother's paternal side traced back about 250+ years too. Yes, my cousin Russell can actually tell us almost every move and the specific year that our family moved across the country. Luckily, he is going to document it in a book - or at least I hope so, soon! My sister and I and our spouses were lucky enough to find some time to travel to Arkansas and visit my grandfather's side of the family. My uncle is a minister and was asked to give a sermon at his hometown church. It always looks exactly the same, beautiful!

I use to travel to Pine Bluff, Arkansas every summer to visit grandparents as well as all my cousins, aunts and uncles. It was always a different adventure depending on who I hung out with or what was going on. The drive to Arkansas was brutal - 1.5 days from NC, but my time spent there was always fun and well worth the long drive!

It's so funny, my husband has been surrounded by redheads for over 5 years that we have known each other. You should have seen my wedding - my friends staying at one of the hotels knew exactly who was my family because there were sooo many redheads running around. :) Then, we go to Arkansas and he is shocked to learn that many of my cousins on this side have blonde hair. He kept saying, "that one is blonde too" - every time he met a new cousin.

Anyhoo, it is so nice to have such a big family. I never realized how big it really was until my husband explained that he doesn't really know his 2nd cousins, or his 2nd cousins once removed, or even his 3rd cousins. I almost know all of them and was lucky enough to meet a couple new ones this trip! I'm also lucky enough to have my family history documented on every side dating back to Europe. I love the history! Anyway, that's enough about that. Maybe more later - I could go on for hours!

Emily, Corey, Julianna and I got together to capture their little one's personality and some family shots. Julianna loves to have her photo taken, or at least loved posing for me! :) She was on as soon as I got there and we started out with some cute cute shots in the bushes! We also got some great photos that captured memories of their home that will be a home in the past at some point in the near future. So, I'm a little partial, but here is a wonderful family I took photos of towards the end of the summer. "Why are you a little partial Katie?" Well, this family is my family - my sister's family and the family I started taking photos of that led me to where I am now. Because of the very first "portrait" photo (I've taken nature photos most of my life) I ever tried to capture was of my niece as a baby and because it moved me as well as other family members so much, I made photography the career I want to devote my life to. You can view that photo of her in my title bar.

Anyways, here are several photos that I captured during one of our many yearly trips to North Litchfield Beach, SC. I spent almost every summer of my life there and plan on spending every summer from now on there too. If you've never heard of Litchfield, it's near Pawley's Island and is one of the best little areas to visit.

Small World!

Sometimes this world seems very small! The other day I had lunch with someone I did not know at all. I am a volunteer in a wonderful organization, the Jr. League of Savannah and I am currently the chair of a committee. It is a requirement to find a non-active (or sustaining) member as an advisor for your committee, so our president of the organization suggested someone who she thought would be perfect for the job. Caroline Edwards and I met for a wonderful lunch and we soon figured out that it's a small world after all! Not only are we both members of the Jr. League, but we also live in the same neighborhood. How funny is that? She lives right down the street. It was great to get to know someone who also lives in the same area. On top of all of that, we learned that we were both part of the wedding circuit; Caroline has been a wedding planner for several years now and I am quickly trying to make friends within the circuit. Honeymoon - Finally!

My husband and I finally were able to take some time and go on our long awaited honeymoon. We were married in April of 2007, but circumstances beyond our control forced us to not take a honeymoon until June of 2008. And what a much need vacation it was! We traveled to Key West and highly enjoyed ourselves! Yes, I dragged him around and made him look at some of the historical aspects of Key West, but we also took full advantage of the bars on every corner. Almost all of our meals were spectacular (only one was not appetizing). Many days were filled with activities of sightseeing, including a trip to the rocky beach; Sailing-Kayaking-Snorkeling trip where we spotted beautiful fish, sea turtles, a nurse shark, etc.; we also went on a boat ride to the Dry Tortugas and went snorkeling the whole day, which of course ended in my back and butt being sunburnt! After the bad sunburn, we took a day off and were lazy on the couch. The next day brought us to the whole purpose of going to Key West, scuba diving!

Now, let me explain about the scuba diving...Towards the end of last year, I was pressuring Michael, my husband, to participate in an activity with me. Of course I suggested shag lessons or yoga. He was definitely not interested in yoga. So then I thought about his interests and told him that I thought about taking scuba diving lessons. He was all for it. So then we decided that Key West should be the place for our honeymoon. (We really wanted to go to Costa Rica, but right now is not a great time - he just graduated, I'm trying to start a business, etc). So I took scuba diving lessons in February. Let me tell you, it's one of the scariest things I have ever done. I mean really, who ever thought you could breathe under water and live, much less enjoy it? I had around 8 classes and I didn't feel sort of comfortable until around the 6th class. When I went for my diving certification in Ginnie Springs, FL, my fears all came flying back at me my first time in the water. But by the second time, I was fine. I will occasionally have a panic attack, but the beauty of the underwater world calms you. It is amazing how awesome water life is!

So, Key West, was my first "open water" dive. OMG!!!! That is exactly what I was thinking the entire time we were riding on the boat and putting on my gear and jumping into the 3 foot seas! OMG!!! What the heck was I thinking! While we were floating on top of the water, the waves are hitting me in the face and I am taking in gallons of salt water, my husband is asking me if I am ready and all I can think is "are you crazy?" I kept telling him to give me a minute. He said it would be fine. Did I believe him? That's what marriage is all about - TRUST, right? And heck, he's been doing this for some seven years; he wouldn't put me in danger.

I finally decided I was going to be ok and took the plunge, literally! OMG!!! It was absolutely beautiful!!!! The beauty calms you immediately. The silence, except for your bubbles coming out of your regulator, is even calming. It's just so amazing. I can't even describe it. But to only stress how I would recommend scuba diving lessons to anyone and everyone! Yea, it's definitely not natural and scary at first, but it's all so worth it every time you take that plunge!!! Unfortunately, I don't have an underwater camera. Definitely a purchase I will hopefully make at some point in my life. But I did get several shots in Key West. If anyone ever decides to go to the southern most point, try to avoid the summer time - it is really, really, really hot!!!

Sarah + Bryan's Wedding - St. John's Episcopal Church, Savannah Yacht Club, Savannah Wedding Photographer

On July 18th and 19th, I got to stay in Savannah and was fortunate enough to photograph Sarah and Bryan's rehearsal dinner and wedding. Sarah and Bryan are the cutest couple and even though I was not able to meet them prior to the celebration, they were open to my ideas. We had a great time taking some classic shots in a classic historical home. The Green-Meldrim House was absolutely beautiful and perfect for Sarah to get ready in. The reception was held at the Savannah Yacht Club and we were blessed with the most awesome sunset for pre-reception photos. The entire night was filled with love and happiness including a boat ride off in the moonlight. Thanks for thinking of me Martha! Sarah and Bryan, I hope y'all had a great honeymoon!

Paul, Emily + Harper Family Portrait - Palmetto Bluff, Bluffton, South Carolina Portrait Photographer

Mid June took me up the road to beautiful Bluffton, SC to photograph this Family. We were lucky enough to take some fabulous photos in Palmetto Bluff. If you haven't been to Palmetto Bluff, I highly recommend it! It is gorgeous! It's one of those places that you could just sit and take it all in - all day! Ahhhh!

Harper is growing up sooo fast. She also is turning into an independent little woman with the cutest smile. We captured some great playful shots as well as some relaxed family photos. I had a great time catching up with Paul and Emily. Hope we can do it again soon, guys!

Drew, Jenn + little Jackson Family Portrait - Downtown Savannah, Georgia Portrait Photographer

In the beginning of June, I shot a family very special to me. Several months before June, I was lucky enough to take Jenn and Drew's maternity photographs where Jenn was cool enough to let me photograph her pregnant belly and her husband Drew. We had such a good time then, I knew this day would be just as great. Little Jackson was a little over a month old and very cooperative! I guess he had to be, since he had no say in the matter :). We got some perfect shots that day; some photos that I hope they can cherish for a lifetime! Thanks guys!

So, first I must apologize for not blogging lately. I feel like my life has been getting in the way and I will try to do much better about it.

The beginning of June started off with one of my favorite families. Baby Lucy was about 9 months old, and momma Tonya felt that it was time for a family portrait. We strolled off to Forsyth Park in downtown Savannah, GA and did our best to work with the bright light and tried to dodge the tourists. We had a great time posing, laughing, and lounging in the grass. Enjoy!

It was so great to hang out with Jenn and Drew while Jenn was still pregnant! And now that little Jackson is here, it's amazing that she was even that pregnant. Jenn and Drew were such great sports and were open to all of my crazy ideas for photos, including in a tree! Karen + Erny's Wedding - Albemarle, North Carolina Wedding Photographer

This past March, I traveled up to Albemarle, NC (sort of near Charlotte), and shot Karen and Erny's wedding. I had never met Karen nor Erny, but shortly after arriving in the middle of town at the local train station, I met the happy couple. You never know what kind of personality you may happen upon, but they were the most relaxed couple I have ever shot. Not a care in the world, even though it was the most important day of their lives. They were great in letting me be creative with their photos. Their family and friends were great too! And it was so good to see an old friend of my sister's and her beautiful growing family too. My Very First Blog

So, here we go...I am so excited to be apart of the blog world! When I first heard of a blog, I had no idea what one was. And once I learned about them, I thought, "Who would want to spend time doing that?" Ha! Here I am. I seem to have eaten my words. I will have to give my friend Betsy kudos for introducing me to blogging. I am so looking forward to posting my happenings and for others to learn more about me and my photography style! Please be patient with me as I am still learning and am open to any help anyone is willing to give me. That's what I love about the photography community: its willingness to help others, network and friendships.
